Before you calculate
Free T4 ≠ Total T4. These are different tests with different units and intervals. Check the full name on your report. μg/dL and mcg/dL mean the same unit.
TSH units: 1 mIU/L = 1 μIU/mL. Changing between them does not change the number.
Separate scales: each result has its own range meter. TSH and T4 cannot meaningfully share one numeric bar chart.
What if a result says “<” or “>”?
This version accepts exact numbers only. Do not remove inequality signs and treat a detection limit as an exact value. Ask your clinician or lab to interpret it.
Why are example ranges different from my lab?
Assays, age and clinical context affect reference intervals. The examples use Mayo Clinic Laboratories adult intervals: TSH 0.3–4.2 mIU/L; FT4 0.9–1.7 ng/dL; Total T4 4.5–11.7 μg/dL; FT3 2.0–4.4 pg/mL. They are not treatment targets or universal cutoffs.
Can this tell me which medicine to take?
No. A blood-test pattern does not establish its cause or a dose. A clinician considers symptoms, history, medicines and sometimes repeat or additional tests. Do not start, stop or change treatment using this tool.
TSH
A pituitary hormone that signals the thyroid. An abnormal TSH needs context and often a thyroid hormone measurement.
Free T4 & Total T4
Free T4 measures unbound hormone. Total T4 includes protein-bound hormone and can change with binding proteins.
Patterns, not diagnoses
Pregnancy, serious illness, medicines and assay interference can change how a panel should be interpreted.
